About Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is located at the southern end of Treasure Island, a barrier island in Pinellas county on the west or Gulf Coast of Florida. Major land access to Treasure Island is from Central Avenue in St. Petersburg over the Treasure Island Causeway.

Historically, Treasure Island was a home of the mound building Timucuan Indians and a hideaway for early pirates.
The island was developed in the first 20 years of the 20th Century and it is now a highly developed area with high rise condos, resorts, homes and cottage rentals. The 3.5 mile island has about 7,250 permanent residents and thousands of tourist visitors each season.

BEACH FEATURES
The beaches of Treasure Island are among the widest and whitest of Gulf Coast beaches, with good swimming. The Beach Trail is a mile long walkway that runs along the beach on the east side, giving access to all the motels, hotels, restaurants and bars.

Sunset Beach is a beach community with good public access from the Treasure Island Beach Center (Tern parking lot) where there is metered parking. At the southern end of the lot is the public boardwalk that extends to the tip of Treasure Island at Blind Pass. The beach is closed from 1-5 a.m. daily. This is a very popular beach with residents and even surfers when the surf is up. Sunset Beach has a beach pavilion with picnic tables, restrooms, and boardwalks that are wheelchair accessible.

ACTIVITIES
Aside from sunning and swimming on the beach, there are a number of charters and tours that can be launched from Treasure Island. Popular tours include fishing, snorkeling and dolphin watch cruises. For more land based activities, the Treasure Island Golf, Tennis, and Recreation Center has a 9 hole golf course and a nice tennis center where matches can be arranged. Downtown Treasure Island has shopping at several clothing stores.

DINING/ENTERTAINMENT
Treasure Island has a long waterfront bar with nightly popular bands. There are also family concerts at the Treasure Island Community Center and blue grass music is played at the Treasure Island Park. Most of the restaurants and bars on Treasure Island are within walking distance or accessible by street trolley.
