About Siesta Beach
Siesta Beach lies on the west side of the 8 mile barrier island known as Siesta Key on the Gulf Coast of Florida, in the Sarasota area. Siesta Key is a lively beach community that was first settled in the late 1800's. Siesta Key has ample recreational, dining and accommodation facilities, and Siesta Beach has the softest, whitest sand along the Gulf Coast.
SIESTA BEACH FEATURES
Siesta Beach was recently rated the number 1 beach in the United States for 2011 by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach. He is the director of Florida International University's Lab for Coastal Research, and he grades a beach on 50 different factors. Siesta Beach came out a winner because of it's nearly pure quartz crystal, sugar white, and very soft sand. The beach is hundreds of yards wide, and it has a gently sloping bottom and sand bars, making it quite safe for children. The view is unobstructed for miles. The wave action is very gentle, and the water is a lovely blue and very clean and clear. It is a very popular beach and can be crowded. It is also a no smoking area.
SIESTA BEACH FACILITIES
Siesta Beach is well equipped as a park with picnic tables, shade trees, good parking, restrooms, showers, snack bars and grills. There are tennis courts, and volley ball nets are set up along the beach. There is also a playground for children. Each Sunday night at sunset there is a Drum Circle where locals and visitors can play drums and dance at sunset.
RECREATION AND RENTALS
There are dozens of shops and restaurants at the north end of Siesta Key Village, and at the south end there are more restaurants and a marina and boat rentals. Arrangements can be made for renting shallow water boards, pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, snorkeling gear and parasailing flights. For land use, there are bike, segway and scooter rentals. The Siesta Trolley can be rented for private tours and parties.
FOOD AND LODGING
Siesta Key has a wide variety of hotels, condos, villas and beach cottages for rent. There is also a campground at Turtle Beach. There are many choices for restaurants, and some have live music.
