About Siesta Key
Siesta Key is a barrier island stretching about eight miles on the Florida Gulf Coast. Interstate highway I-75 runs north-south a few miles east of Siesta Key. With only two bridges connecting with the mainland, Siesta Key has grown gradually while preserving the natural paradise.
First settled in 1846, it remained a tiny fishing village for a century. Today Siesta Key has over fifteen thousand permanent residents and many winter visitors. Siesta Drive is the north bridge that runs into downtown Sarasota and provides access to the Sarasota Airport. On the south side of Siesta Key is the Stickney Point Road bridge, providing easy access to Interstate highway I-75.
Accommodations range from beachfront cottages to condominiums to large homes. Marinas provide docks for visitors, plus waterfront restaurants welcome boaters. Siesta Key marinas offer boat rentals and fishing charters. The Siesta Key Village shopping district is on the north side, while the Siesta South shopping area begins at Stickney Point Road and continues along Midnight Pass Road.
Popular with shell collectors is quiet Turtle Beach on the south side. The Siesta Key public beach covers half a mile on the north side, then Crescent Beach continues another mile and a half to Point of Rock, a scuba diving area rumored to have buried pirate treasure. Palmer Point Beach begins at the southern tip of Siesta Key.
